Filmmaker Subhash Ghai spoke about his 1993 film KhalNayak, which completed 30 years on Sunday. He revealed that Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai was initially a folk song and expressed his surprise at the controversy surrounding its lyrics. The film is widely regarded as one of the most successful movies of the 1990s and has gained a cult following over time.
In an interview with a leading news portal, Subhash said, "My closest memory of KhalNayak is when people labelled Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai as vulgar. It was a tragedy for me... a major shock. We treated it as a folk song and presented it in an artistic way. But when the film was released, there were protests."
He recalled how a prominent newspaper had described their song as a classic example of Indian cinema, which was a source of comfort. The song was originally a folk tune, but now it seems to be better appreciated by the public.
Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai was written by lyricist Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
